Dental Sealants

Dental sealants are performed in a routine procedure which consists of painting an acrylic tooth-colored “coating” onto the surface of the teeth. When done properly, the sealant is highly effective at “sealing” the tooth’s deep grooves and preventing decay on the surfaces of the teeth used for chewing food. Dental sealants are both safe to use and act as a protective barrier for tooth enamel against acids and plaque.

Advantages of Sealants

Sealants prevent food particles and plaque from entering and building up within the grooves and depressions of the teeth. These grooves are areas where your tooth brush and floss often miss, making sealants an extra layer of protection.

Sealant Application

Dental sealants take only minutes to apply for each affected tooth. Reapplication is only needed every several years as the strong sealant material holds up well under the normal wear and tear of everyday chewing. Both children and adults can help fight against tooth decay by having sealants applied to their teeth.

Age Requirements

Dental sealants can be placed on patients of any age to prevent tooth decay and protect the surface of the teeth. Even infants can benefit from sealants to prevent decay associated with what the baby drinks. A dentist can determine if sealants are an appropriate option for an adult or if another treatment is more suitable.

When to Obtain Sealants

Teeth that possess deep groves or depressions that are not easily cleaned with a standard tooth brush or floss may benefit from dental sealants. However, not all teeth may require sealants.
